Q&A: Ballerina Alysia Johnson
We went behind the scenes at our video shoot to chat with the passionate dancer about self-image and audience favorites.
Childhood home…
Dallas
Current home…
NYC
Started ballet…
At age 5. But at the time, I was set on being a gymnast…
Why I love ballet…
It helps you understand and celebrate your body more than you could imagine.
Food for fuel…
In the mornings, my go-to is a bagel or an oatmeal loaded with fruit. For lunch and dinner, I can always count on a vegetable stir-fry to keep me satisfied and fueled up.
Non-ballet workout of choice…
Yoga, to help maintain and increase flexibility. If I’m not taking class at YogaWorks or CorePower, I follow a YouTube class where I can go at my own pace.
Favorite ballet movie…
Center Stage — the original version. It was actually filmed in Lincoln Center and at the old Juilliard/NYCB studios, and a few years after seeing the movie, I was lucky enough to train in those very same studios. If they do a remake, I would 100% want to be a part of that…
Must-see ballet….
If Firebird is ever being performed near you, go see it! One of the most dynamic ballets and an audience favorite.
Currently reading…
Sula by Toni Morrison.
Binge-watching…
The last season of Grey’s Anatomy
Listening…
Daniel Caesar’s album Freudian — so beautiful.
Dream trip…
Greece
Advice for aspiring dancers…
Don’t be nervous about getting it perfect. Ballet is a practice, and there’s room for everyone.
